Dairy and beef farmers provide consumers with reliable sources of milk and meat but can we be sure that the animal waste is disposed of safely and without environmental and social risks? Current perceptions of farmers, retailers, consumers and local downstream industries, such as tourism and shell fisheries, about pathogen transfers to the food chain were studied. A farm-scale risk assessment tool evaluates how changes in management practices can help to address the problem and the impacts such changes have on farm costs, as well as the potential costs to other stakeholder groups and the region as a whole.
