Recent flood events in Britain have heightened interest in exploring solutions that can join up multiple objectives such as managing flood risk, water resource management, enhanced biodiversity, enjoyment of the countryside, and support to rural livelihoods. This project addresses these issues and re-examines a selection of agricultural flood defence schemes, previously studied in the 1980s, to identify and explain changes in land and water management that have occurred over the last 40 years.

Data created

Historical farm survey data
Aggregated physical and socio-economic data at scheme level based on land owner surveys covering 60 to 80 farms, including mapped farm and field boundaries, farm business characteristics, land tenure, crop and livestock systems, flood and water level regimes and financial and economic assessment of flood defence benefits at field and farm level.

Hydrological floodplain data
Hydrological data for studied floodplains, collected remotely through installation of pressure transducers.

Historical hydrological floodplain data
Hydrological records, design standards, farmer interviews, and site observations for studied floodplains, supported by flood estimation methods. Benefit areas will be mapped according to flood and water table regimes and linked to observed land use and management.
