Loweswater catchment in the Lake District is used as a case study to see how scientists, institutional stakeholders, farmers and residents can share expertise and work together positively for the benefit of their environment. Is the current "carrot and stick" initiative the best option to ensure that landowners look after the environment? Is involving local people more in decision making and using their local knowledge and expertise a viable approach?
